Two Discounts Calculator
The Two Discounts Calculator finds the real final price when two successive discounts are applied one after another, and shows the single equivalent discount. Enter the original price and both discount percentages to see what you actually pay and how much you truly save.
Why two discounts are not just added
When a shop offers 20% off and then another 20% off, it is tempting to think you get 40% off. You do not. The second discount applies to the already-reduced price, not the original, so the combined effect is always less than the sum of the two percentages.
The formula
Final = Original × (1 − d1 ÷ 100) × (1 − d2 ÷ 100). The single equivalent discount is 1 − (1 − d1 ÷ 100) × (1 − d2 ÷ 100), expressed as a percentage.
A worked example
An item priced at 100 with a 20% discount then a 10% discount ends at 100 × 0.8 × 0.9 = 72, so you pay 72 and save 28. The single equivalent discount is 28%, not the 30% you might expect from adding 20 and 10. With 20% then 20%, the true discount is 36%, not 40%.
Spotting the marketing trick
Advertised stacked offers can look bigger than they are. Whenever you see two discounts, run them through this calculator to find the genuine saving before deciding. The order of the two discounts does not change the final price, so 20% then 10% gives the same result as 10% then 20%.
