In-depth guide

What a SIP is

A Systematic Investment Plan means investing a fixed sum at regular intervals, usually monthly, into a mutual fund or similar instrument. Instead of trying to time the market, you buy steadily through ups and downs, which averages your purchase price and turns investing into a simple habit.

The formula

The future value of a monthly SIP is FV = P × ((1 + i)n − 1) / i × (1 + i), where P is the monthly amount, i is the monthly return (annual return ÷ 12 ÷ 100) and n is the number of monthly instalments.

A worked example

Invest 5,000 a month for 10 years at an expected 12% a year. Here P = 5000, i = 0.01 and n = 120. The projected value is about 11,61,695. You will have invested only 6,00,000 of your own money, so roughly 5,61,695 is growth. Keep the same SIP going for 20 years and the projection jumps to about 49,95,740 on 12,00,000 invested, a striking illustration of how compounding rewards patience.

How to read the projection

The return you enter is an assumption, not a guarantee, because market investments rise and fall. Use a realistic long-term figure and try a lower one too, so you can see a conservative outcome. The real lesson from the numbers is that increasing the number of years usually does more for your final corpus than chasing a slightly higher return.

How to use

  1. Enter your details in the fields above. The SIP Calculator accepts everyday values and checks them as you type.
  2. Press the action button (or just start typing for live tools) to run the calculation.
  3. Read your result, along with any supporting figures, in the clearly labelled result box.

Why use this tool

Finance Wave built the SIP Calculator to be genuinely useful: it validates your input so you never see a broken result, formats numbers for your region automatically, and stays readable in both light and dark mode. Because everything happens on your device, it is private by design and keeps working even without an internet connection once the page has loaded.

Frequently asked questions

Is the SIP return guaranteed?
No. A SIP typically invests in market-linked funds whose returns vary year to year and can be negative in some periods. The figure you enter is an assumed long-term average, so treat the result as a projection rather than a promise, and consider trying a lower rate to see a cautious case.
Should I stop my SIP when the market falls?
Falling markets are when a fixed monthly amount buys more units, which lowers your average cost. Investors who keep going through downturns often benefit most. This tool assumes you keep investing steadily, which is the core discipline of a SIP.
What return rate should I use?
Use a realistic long-term average for the kind of fund you hold rather than a recent bumper year. Many people model equity SIPs somewhere in the 10 to 12 percent range and also run a lower number to stay grounded. Lower is safer for planning.
What is the difference between a SIP and a lump sum?
A SIP invests a fixed amount regularly, spreading your entry across many prices. A lump sum invests everything at once. Use this SIP calculator for regular contributions and our compound interest calculator for a single one-time investment.
