In-depth guide

What a PPF is

The Public Provident Fund is a long-term, government-backed savings scheme with a fixed tenure and annual compounding. You contribute each year, the balance earns interest that is added once a year, and the whole amount matures after the full term. It is popular for its safety and tax treatment.

How the growth is calculated

Each year's closing balance is the opening balance plus that year's contribution, all multiplied by (1 + rate). Because contributions keep coming in and interest compounds on the growing balance, the maturity value is much larger than the sum of contributions. The interest earned is the maturity value minus everything you put in.

A worked example

Contribute 1,50,000 a year for 15 years at 7.1%. You invest 22,50,000 of your own money over the term, and with annual compounding the account matures at roughly 40,68,000, meaning about 18,18,000 is interest. The final years contribute the most growth because they compound on the largest balance.

Getting the most from a PPF

Contributing early in the financial year gives that year's deposit more time to earn interest. Staying invested for the full term, and extending it where the scheme allows, lets compounding do its heaviest lifting in the later years. Always use the current official interest rate, as it is reviewed periodically.

Frequently asked questions

Is the PPF interest rate fixed for the whole term?
No. The rate is set by the government and reviewed from time to time, so it can change over the life of your account. This calculator assumes a single rate for simplicity, so enter the current rate and re-check the projection if the rate is revised.
Why is the maturity value so much higher than my contributions?
Because interest compounds every year on a balance that keeps growing from both new contributions and past interest. Over a long tenure like 15 years, the accumulated interest can rival or exceed the total you invested.
Does the timing of my contribution matter?
Yes. Depositing earlier in the year gives that money more time to earn interest for the year, which slightly increases your maturity value over the full term. Regular, early contributions make the most of annual compounding.
Can I contribute any amount I like?
PPF schemes have minimum and maximum annual limits set by the government. Enter a yearly contribution within those limits for a realistic projection. The calculator itself simply compounds whatever annual figure you provide.
