In-depth guide

How a discount works

A discount is a percentage cut from the original price. The amount you save is that percentage of the original, and the price you pay is whatever is left. Knowing both numbers helps you judge whether a sale is really as good as the sign claims.

The formula

Saving = Original × Discount% ÷ 100. Final price = Original − Saving. Equivalently, the final price is Original × (1 − Discount% ÷ 100).

A worked example

A jacket priced at 2,500 is marked 30% off. The saving is 2500 × 30 ÷ 100 = 750 and the final price is 1,750. If a second, separate 10% coupon then applies to that reduced price, it comes off the 1,750, not the original, giving another 175 saved. Stacked discounts always apply one after another, never added together.

Spot the real bargain

A big percentage off a padded price is not always a deal, so compare the final price against what you would normally pay elsewhere. For multiple items, work out the price per unit to compare fairly. And watch for two discounts advertised as one large number: 20% then 20% is not 40% off, it is 36%.

Frequently asked questions

Do two discounts add together?
No. Stacked discounts apply one after the other, each on the already-reduced price. A 20% discount followed by another 20% is 36% off in total, not 40%. Use our two-discounts calculator to see the combined effect exactly.
How do I find the original price from a sale price?
Divide the sale price by (1 minus the discount as a decimal). For example, a 30% discount means dividing the sale price by 0.7 to recover the original. This is useful when only the final price and the percentage are shown.
Is a higher percentage always a better deal?
Not necessarily, because the percentage depends on the starting price, which can be inflated. Always compare the actual final price against what the item costs elsewhere. A smaller discount on a genuinely low base can beat a huge discount on a marked-up price.
Can I use this for a percentage increase, like a price rise?
This tool subtracts a percentage. For an increase, our percentage calculator or markup tools handle adding a percentage on top. The discount calculator is specifically for reductions and savings.
