In-depth guide

How currency conversion works

Converting money means multiplying an amount by the exchange rate between two currencies. If one unit of your currency buys a certain amount of another, then any sum simply scales by that same rate. Because rates move constantly, the key is to use a current figure.

The formula

Converted amount = Amount × Exchange rate. To go the other way, divide instead of multiply, or use the reverse rate, which is 1 ÷ Exchange rate.

A worked example

You have 100 units and the rate is 1 to 83.2. The converted amount is 100 × 83.2 = 8,320. The reverse rate is 1 ÷ 83.2 = 0.01202, so 8,320 converts back to 100. Always confirm which direction the rate is quoted in, since getting it upside down is the most common mistake.

Getting an accurate rate

This tool keeps your data private by never contacting a server, which means you supply the rate yourself. Look up the current mid-market rate from a reliable source and enter it. Remember that banks and money changers add a margin, so the rate you actually receive when exchanging cash or paying by card is usually a little worse than the mid-market figure.

How to use

  1. Enter your details in the fields above. The Currency Converter accepts everyday values and checks them as you type.
  2. Press the action button (or just start typing for live tools) to run the calculation.
  3. Read your result, along with any supporting figures, in the clearly labelled result box.
  4. Use Copy result to grab the answer, Reset to start again, or Copy link to share this tool.

Why use this tool

Finance Wave built the Currency Converter to be genuinely useful: it validates your input so you never see a broken result, formats numbers for your region automatically, and stays readable in both light and dark mode. Because everything happens on your device, it is private by design and keeps working even without an internet connection once the page has loaded.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I have to enter the exchange rate myself?
To keep everything private and offline, this tool never calls an external service, so it cannot fetch live rates on its own. You enter the current rate from a source you trust, and the conversion happens entirely in your browser with no data leaving your device.
Where can I find the current exchange rate?
Look up the mid-market rate from a reputable financial site or your bank. Enter that figure here. Keep in mind that the rate you are actually charged when spending or exchanging usually includes a small margin on top of the mid-market rate.
How do I convert in the opposite direction?
Either enter the reverse rate, which is one divided by the original rate, or simply divide your amount by the rate instead of multiplying. The tool also shows the reverse rate so you can check both directions at a glance.
Is the converted amount exactly what I will receive?
It is the value at the rate you entered. In practice, banks, cards and exchange counters add a margin or fee, so the amount you actually receive is typically slightly lower. Use this as an accurate baseline and expect a small real-world difference.
