In-depth guide

How an electricity bill is made up

Most electricity bills have two parts: a usage charge based on how many units (kilowatt-hours) you consume, and a fixed or standing charge you pay regardless of usage. Understanding both helps you see where your money goes and how much you can influence by cutting consumption.

The formula

Energy cost = Units × Rate per unit. Total bill = Energy cost + Fixed charge. A unit, or kilowatt-hour, is the energy used by a 1,000-watt appliance running for one hour.

A worked example

Use 250 units at a rate of 0.15 per unit with a 5 fixed charge. The energy cost is 250 × 0.15 = 37.50, and adding the fixed charge gives a total of 42.50. To estimate a single appliance, multiply its wattage by hours used and divide by 1,000 to get units: a 1,500-watt heater run for 2 hours uses 3 units, costing 0.45 at that rate.

Cutting the bill

Because the usage charge scales directly with units, the biggest savings come from high-wattage, long-running appliances like heaters, air conditioners and water heaters. Switching to efficient models, running them less and turning off standby loads all reduce the units side of the bill, which is the part you control.

How to use

  1. Enter your details in the fields above. The Electricity Bill Calculator accepts everyday values and checks them as you type.
  2. Press the action button (or just start typing for live tools) to run the calculation.
  3. Read your result, along with any supporting figures, in the clearly labelled result box.
  4. Use Copy result to grab the answer, Reset to start again, or Copy link to share this tool.

Why use this tool

Finance Wave built the Electricity Bill Calculator to be genuinely useful: it validates your input so you never see a broken result, formats numbers for your region automatically, and stays readable in both light and dark mode. Because everything happens on your device, it is private by design and keeps working even without an internet connection once the page has loaded.

Frequently asked questions

What is a unit of electricity?
A unit is one kilowatt-hour, the energy used by a 1,000-watt appliance running for one hour. Your meter measures consumption in these units, and the usage part of your bill is simply units multiplied by the rate per unit.
How do I estimate the cost of a single appliance?
Multiply the appliance's wattage by the hours you run it, then divide by 1,000 to get units, and multiply by your rate. For example, a 2,000-watt appliance for 3 hours uses 6 units, so at a rate of 0.15 it costs 0.90.
Why is there a fixed charge on my bill?
The fixed or standing charge covers the cost of maintaining the supply and infrastructure, and you pay it regardless of how much energy you use. The calculator adds it on top of your usage cost to show the full bill.
Do tiered or slab tariffs affect the result?
Some regions charge different rates for different usage bands. This calculator uses a single rate, so for a slab tariff, calculate each band's units at its own rate and add them, then include the fixed charge for the full estimate.
